Hey guys, just signed up.

Just obtained a tank off a friend, measures 950Lx450Dx500Hmm, picked it up for 50 bucks AUS

So starting with that i went around making myself a stank, got off a friend an old section of a kitchen which was meant to contain a dishwasher, braced the back of it a little further and fitted a top and braced the overlapping edges.

Tank on all a goer and set up, had the tank/filter running for 3 days with no fish to get water right, cleaned out filter and put all back together.

Yesterday put in 2 plants and some feeder fish, local aquarium guy told me to run the tank in with some feeders to get the bio whachamacallit happening and ready.

Going to be putting an oscar in next week after having this run for a while, guy ive bought my stuff off has them in there about 2 inches long for 17 bucks aus. so after i get him in, i shall post some more

Just wondering if there was anything ive missed. Ill post a piccie of the tank AS IS and let us know.

Thanks in advance

Tobey

Hi there Tobey. I am ashamed to say that I have kept Oscar's before and I never knew nothing about water conditions until I joined this site.
I have had a tank running in my kitchen for two weeks now and I am getting the water correct bud before I put any fish in it. To start fresh from scratch it takes 5-6 weeks to cycle a tank. Meaning, get the proper bacteria in ur filter to deal with the tanks conditions. The main thing on the site you will find is taking water samples for Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates and testing ur Ph. This is the back bone of keeping a tank.
I have been keeping a close eye on my tank and posting all the relevant information and the guys and Gals having been giving me invaluable advice on what to do. Check it out if you like.... Jamie

So you reckon run it for a couple of weeks before adding my oscar? I got told to put some lil fish that dont mean much to get some bacteria build up (poo im assuming) happening

the tank is pretty much a 3ft width by 1.6ft deep and 1.47ft high

might let it run for a week, do a water sample test and results on here for advice, that way if you guys dont think the water is ready, i wont put an oscar in!

The normal reponse you will get is that one Oscar by itself requires 55gallons of water. Yes, putting goldfish in will cycle the tank quicker but will take longer than a week to get the job done I think....

PS. At the top of the home page of OFL will tell you everything about the fish, tank set up and right down to breeding them. Well worth a read ...

Thanks for that, I read a fair bit of it a week or 2 ago, worked out my tank has around 48-49UK gallons i believe. I think it should be OK to run. I have the oversized external filter so filtering shouldnt be too much of a problem hopefully, will try and look for a water test kit this arvo after work, 45 mins to go, slow slow day.....

Anyway, thanks for the help, just checked out your new monster tank, looks freakin sweet!!

Hi there Tobey and Welcome!

Jamie is right the tank will need to cycle, and this process will take about 5 weeks..Get the water test kit! The Liquid type! And other than that you are doing exactly what you need to.. During this cycle process, DO NOT clean your filter!

Any questions Just ask away!

I was too when I did my first.
