My husbands fav oscar has been sick for a while now. It is suffering real bad and is close to dieing. We have another oscar in the same tank and dont want the one dieing in there. What is the most humane thing we can do?

If you cannot bring yourself to kill the fish quickly by breaking its neck, or severing the spinal cord with a very sharp knife then I would recommend using clove oil. This is an anaesthetic that is readily available from any pharmacy. I think it is mostly used when children are teething and have very sore gums. The following instructions will show you how to humanely destroy a fish without causing stress whatsoever.

Be sure to take the fish out and carry out the procedure in a container on its own

OFL got you covered with the taking out.... if that would be your best choice.....

however, considering your passion with the fish, i just want to
find out what happened; what is the present condition; and post a picture
if available. my point is..there might be a way to still save the fish.

Thank you for wondering if the fish can be saved. He has been sick for about 2 months now. Real bad popeye and losing scales. My husband has done every thing Tetra and Petsmart has suggested and he only keeps getting worse. My husband does the water changes and it seems like he gets worse afterward. All day he has been lifeless and not realy mioveing other than the water itself spinning him. I know that if there were any way my husban would have found it by now.

don't ask petsmart about how to save a fish, they are a heartless corporation that does not care, ask your local pet store. i am very sorry to hear about your fish, i would definitely take it out of the tank, then do what OFL said.

Petsmart as a whole might be like that but the people who work in the fish department at the one here in town are realy caring and very knowledgable on fish. For the most part they will say about the same a Tetra. But off that. My husband did take him out this morning and it seams like we were not treating for the right thing. My husband said that it had worms coming out that looked dead.

I do want to get another opinon on this. Petsmart did say that for the other one we should do a water change and put in a parisite medicine. Do you agree and is there anything else you would do?

Really we would just be guessing as to what could be wrong. Is the tank still running? If you plan on getting another fish then you would be wise to carry out a large water change. I don't see how treating the tank with a parasitic medication is going to help your situation, most parasites that are found inside fish have been ingested somehow that are not free swimming like Ick.

If indeed your fish did have an internal worm parasitic infestation then maybe you should try a look back at what you were feeding the fish, this may give you an indication of where the worms came from. Obviously sourcing your fish from reliable sources always a good idea so before buying any fish, have a good look at it and make sure that it doesn't look ill, or abnormal in any way.

We rescued both of them, albino tiger and red, from Walmart. We got them at the same time. When we got them they were about an inch long now they are about 7 inches. We've had them for about 9 months. Ther were both very active and healthy. The red one got sick maybe 3 months or so age. The normal food we feed them is the Cichlid Gold pellets. We switched to the sticks for a little while. However we do feed the feeder fish some. We started with minoes and then went to gold fish. We would get them from Petsmart.

We do still have the albino in the tank and don't plan on getting another one. If we do get another one it will have to be from a person because the stores here only have the small ones.

When buying a couple of O's at the same time from a LFS the chances are that they are both from the same hatch are they not?

I would go with getting a couple of small ones that can be raised together and they are easily taught. When I get teh tank all ready lol

The problem with that is that the only tank wecould put themin already has 1 that is already about 7 inches and it's only a 55 gal tank. We already have so many tanks here that we have no more room for more. So we will only get more if the one we have dies.

I wouldn't feed them feeder fish from the pet store. Its possible they can be carry types of disease.Breeding your own feeder fish is better.
