Probably your best bet, I mean my oscars were petsmart rescues, and they turned out great. When I bought one, the guy working was actually knowledgeable about fish, I was shocked and amazed.

He asked what size tank I had, what was already in the tank, how long i'd been keeping fish, really glad to see that kind of stuff. Though I'm sure at the end of the day, if someone comes in and says they have a 1g goldfish bowl they're still going to sell them the fish they want, it is a business after all.

So while I don't champion the chain stores by any means, sometimes it's worth taking a look. As long as the fish don't appear terrible sometimes you can find that diamond in the rough.

Yep, there's a shop here that sells them. Only reason I knew about em. Kinda sad really, that someone would do that to a fish

a while back I made a promise to never support a pet shop with dyed fish... well, I wish that left any pet shops at all in either of the two cities I work in. Haven't ever seen mollies like that except online, but dyed parrotfish, danios and dye injected glassfish/black neons are everywhere. I can't look at them, really.

I've asked, and it seems that the shop owners genuinly don't know it hurts the fish (these aren't all generally malicious and/or greedy people - some are, and I don't go there anymore, but most no) and don't care to believe me about these fish (or to find out).
Have you guys asked the petshop why they sell such things?

no I haven't they wouldn't listen anyway... if they want to sell them they will . especially if they are making them money... but the one LFS go to most does not normally have dyed fish ... they do however try and sell RTC like they do not grow into leviathans all the time

Nina,
Having managed an aquarium store several years ago, it all boils down to the almighty dollar; if people are willing to pay for these mutants, pet shops will sell them. If there's no demand, they won't. I can remember my boss ordering those dyed glass fish, simply because people wanted them. The fault w/ all this really lies w/ the general public & an insatiable demand for "gimmick" fish.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.
