I was wondering some fish are shipped over very long distances how is it done ?
When I get a fish from a LFS to my house, I avoid rush hours, get the fish and come directly to my house, put the fish immediately in the tank, when shipping a fish over a long distance how is it done ?? surely they don't simply send it in a plastic bag like I get it from my LFS??

it's all about packaging. adding protection so the bag inside wouldn't get damaged, adding air stone, and most of the time it's next day air ...

I think it might be worth your while reading around about it, there are a great many tricks to it.

www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/transporting_cichlids.php

www.koivet.com/a_shipping_moving_koi_fish.html

just two articles that are fairly comprehensive, especially the second one.

They have special tabs that release oxygen into the bag. Often these aren't even necessary if shipping is less than 2 days. The dissolved oxygen in the water is enough

But....a lot of countries have quarantine procedures, that requier fish to stay at a certified Fish shop at customs for a longer time, and this can happen quite often, between say Peru and Holland. :( :( :(

i had my fish shipped from Florida to California. they all survived. they came in bags inside a cardboard box that was lined with styrofoam. not sure if they used the tabs jason meantioned.

the water was kind of cold when it got here. but the fish were fine. good expeirience.
