My understanding is that most puffers are actually brackish fish, and would need to maintained as such. One exception is the Bumble Bee puffer (Colomesus asellus) which originates from the Amazon basin. It gets about 5.5"max so it may not suit your needs. I had one a while back, and it was one of the coolest fish I have ever seen, but they are high maintenance, you actually have to prune their teeth or they will grow so large the fish can not eat.

The dwarf or pea puffer, from India I believe, is another true freshwater puffer. They only grow to around an inch, inch and a half but are very cool little tank inhabitants. They don't require teeth trimming like all the other puffers, but they can be picky eaters. And they are really aggressive. I've kept them before without any problems aside from the agression. They like a well established and well planted tank. They sleep in the leaves of the plants. They even take daytime naps sometimes which is weird.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

I wouldn't keep any species of puffers w/ Oscars, unless you want to have the Oscars beaten senseless or chewed up by those teeth............puffers are very aggressive, best kept as a species only tank(& most only as single specimens, as they usually can't even be kept w/ conspecifics). Forewarned is fore-armed.......

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.
