This is JD my Jack dempsey and he has had cloudy eyes for 6mnths now. I have treated it with several treatments. He was in isolation and then in with my Oscars but they are much bigger and having issues so I have put him in with goldfish temperaly whilst waiting for new tank that wont arrive until 2nd week of Nov. He seems alot happier with goldfish and his eyes are clearing abit better with treatment. Im planning to do quarter water change monday but am I just getting rid of treatment or would more cycling be better? I dont know water tests at moment as I have been a little proccupied with my O's.

Has anyone got any advise or know a good treatment? He seems fine in himself and eats plenty although very slow growing but Im guessing that is because Im comparing him to my O's. At the moment he thinks he is ghost Koi.

The main causes of cloudy eye are poor water quality or bad nutrition

Can post test results for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate

Also what have you been feeding him, and when he was in the oscars did get some of everything or was he left with the scraps from certain foods

hes on a mix of foods, bloodworm, crushed mealworms, hikari and sera cichlid pellets i mix between the two to give variation. He is also getting sera growth food as he is slow growing and then there is gold fish flakes as he is currently in with goldfish. He occasionally has tinned sweetcorn and earthworms as treats. At the moment I've treated water with Tetra contraspot and then fungistop (about 2weeks apart) which both say they get rid of cloudy eye. I have had oscar's tank water tested and it was fine but i havent had tank tested since I have had goldfish in there which is about a month now. But the tank was fine before confirmed at shop; Im going to have to get my own test kits I know because the fish people are nice enough doing them for free and all but it is finding time to get to a shop whilst open. I am learning and I will buy my own kits.

So if I keep water changing it should improve hopefully; but if I do water change will I be getting rid of treatment? It was put in today and I've planned to change water on monday when I get day off. Whatever I do seems to make it clear up for about a week and then it goes back worse; it was only in one eye to start but its now in both eyes and I'm worried it is doing permanent damage to his eyesight.

I just dont get why he has had it for so long. And also is he the right size or is he small? He is about 9cm just under 4inch and he is about 8months now.

ps he has always been keen for food I dont think that is an issue and he was only with the oscars for 2months but I think it might be too soon they are still alot bigger I thought the bigger tank would encourage him to grow abit more but with shinji being grumpy all of a sudden I took him back out as I didn't want to risk him being eaten.

banging the head too hard against the tank wall and bad water condition
are two main causes of blurry eyes or cloudy eyes... unless you can post
water parameters, it remains one of the suspects...

cloudy is caused by poor water conditions. These "electric blue" JDs can be more prone to diseases and bad water quality. Do 40% water change today, then 20% each day for a week. Keep a close eye on the cloudy eyes. (no pun intended ) let us know on the progress.

good luck

The problem with getting your water teested at a LFS is they often will say water is fine when it isnt. If you get your water tested as a LFS then make sure they follow the test instructions exactly and show you the colours on the chart so that you see what your actual results are. The best thing to do is to get yourself a test kit and test yourself

In the meantime do some extra water changes as suggested.

so if i leave of the treatments and just do waterchanges more frequent it should be a better choice in long run.

My partner was meant to buy kit today as he was at shop but he forgot he was too distracted as it is a large garden centre aswell.

If i were you i would concentrate on getting your water quality good. Doing water changes will dilute any meds added. Get a test kit ASAP (Ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)

If you wanted to continue with the meds you will have to redose for the volume of water changed. so if you did a 50% water change, you will have to redose for half the meds added.

Yup. Don't worry about the meds. Just do some big water changes. eventually you will get to a 50% water change once per week and you will have no more cloudy eye problems.
