Namaste all, i just set up my new 50g and was planning on putting my EBJD in it with a female convict. Now my question is how many other fish could i potentially have with them? I dont have the fanciest filtration just 1 marineland emp 400 and a 280 running on it as well. The convict isn't too aggressive and i've never seen my JD attack a fish or be too territorial, so with all that in mind would you say i could maybe add a pictus cat? maybe some schooling fish? if not i understand i would just love to give the tank a lil more eye candy. Thanks

Convicts can get aggressive as well as JD's as they get bigger. Saying that i have heard EBJD can be very weak specimens and do have lots of health problems- not sure how one would fare with a convict in the tank.

If EBJD's get as big as normal JD's you will be pushed to add any more fish. Best stick to smaller fish that dont need to be in a schoal. I have a couple of hoplo cats that are nice fish and they dont get too big, they should be ok in your tank (assuming there is no bullying)
I can't get no sleep

the idea that female convicts are non aggresive is false, i have seen it first hand.
they may be less aggresive as males but still, i saw a 2inch female covict attack a 4inch oscar. it ripped its eye out which killed it

so dont risk it

i never said she wasn't agressive haha, just that i've never seen her try to pick on anything bigger than her.. she just swims away.

My EBJD is 5" long right now and i know he still has a bit more to grow, so maybe his aggression hasn't shown.

The EBJD and Convict were tank mates in a 29gallon for months so i now they can get along fairly well, ill have to add one fish to see how they react and go from there.
would i be pushin my biomass with 3 fish in a 50? or is my forseen problem strictly territorial?

well if they have been in the same tank for months and they got along fine that makes sence then. you would probably be pushin it with another large fish, what filtration system do you have?

Namaste my friend, i currently have an Marineland emp 400 and a 280 running on the tank.

when i got the tank it came with some fish so my 50g is currently stocked with
my fish
1 EBJD
1 Female Convict

fish that came with the tank
1 Pictus cat
1 blue gourami (cant spell it sorry )

now as of yet the only aggression i've seen is from the convict to the blue gorami (its really rare and happens for a second, i watch my tank ALOT )

I want to give a good life to any fish that comes into my care and find it difficult to take a fish to a LFS ( i see it like the pound) however obviously if keeping the other fish is detrimental to the life of my EBJD and Convict i understand and would obviously have to rehome the fish that came into my possession.

again i've noticed little to no aggression and understand it may become a behavior that becomes more prevalent as my fish age, but should it not happen would having those 2 fish with them be fine?

i guess my question has come down to this:
In a 50 gallon tank with 2 decent filters on it, would it be a biomass or territorial problem with the fish i have?

im sorry if i've rambled in any of this, its just i feel like im actually starting to understand how to keep fish more ideally and its very exciting

Thanks again too all those who have responded or may still give their advice, i have come to find this site to be an invaluable resource for information on keeping larger freshwater fish (or just fish in general ;P) and will recommend it to all fanciers i meet in this wonderful world. So thanks again, and pics will come as soon as i feel confident i wont be shunned for over stocking when you all see the fish haha
