hi guys i have 230 baby jewels about 6-8 weeks old and about an inch and a half long but they have paired off and are displaying definate mating behaviour ,lip locking, guarding territory ,colouring up etc .....but i understand that cichlids in general dont reach sexual maturity untill they are about a year old ???? but im definately observing said behaviour in twelve pairs of the juvenile juwels can anyone throw a bit more light on this for me ......... surely they are far to young for this !!!!!!!!!!!

also i have 46 juv convicts that are about 3-4 weeks old and measure about half an inch ......

any shouts guys????????????

sorry butty, but i don't have experience with convicts.
i understand that some fish do reproduce at their young
age like tilapia but produce from young age do not grow
as much like a produce of fully grown spawner. perhaps
convict do the same.

if i remember correctly convicts are ready to breed at about 6 months of age. i know mine were but they are hybrids but i do beleive that the regular cons are the same. as for jewels i have no clue on them.

awesome !!!!!!!!!! are they realy as agro as they are made out to be ....i have always steered clear for that very reason as i keep community cichlid tanks ...as a rule

they have there moments for sure. i think what makes them a little on the hazzardous side is the teeth. they come equiped with pseudo canines and can leave quite the mark on your hands(trust me on that one). i going to try and see if one can co-habitate with 2 of my oscars in a 220 and ill let you now if if i run into any serious problems.
