I currently have 3 large Angels, I also have a 55 with about 6 baby Malawi Cichlids (the biggest is about 3/4 of an inch long), and 5 killi loachs, Now my question is, can I combine these two tanks?

The Malawis will go in the 170 gallon Malawi tank when they are big enough. But will they nip the fins of my Angels? The Angels can't eat the Malawis but I am worried about my Angels fins...

Thanks

You could give it a try and just watch them real close. It might be at night the most damage would be done though. But if you're like me you check the tanks if you wake up at night anyway Do you have any new pics of your angels?
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

Hi Nikisue, you should probably be more worried of the angels nipping your malawis if they are that small, i had angels as a kid and they were nightmare fin nippers. I've not heard of many tanks with S,American and african cichlids in so i'm not sure. Any pics of your malawis?

Here are the pics. My Angels don't nip each other, and the malawis don't bother each other.

Thanks Medic... I just wonder if I can get away with putting the Angels in with the 55 of baby Malawis?

Are your angels going to adapt to those water conditions of african lakes?

The water is the same in all my tanks. With the exception of the goldfish tank. LOL That tank is all on it's own.

I just don't want any Angels with nipped fins.

I was just wondering, I know Malawi's like higher ph levels than South American rivers/streams have. Don't Malawi's like pH's up around 8.0?

Everybody in my house have a PH of 7.6 cause that is what comes out of the tap... I really don't like putting chemicals into my tank so as long as everyone is growing eating and looking good I don't worry.

for optimum condition your are right most africans like the ph on the higher side 8-8.5 but realistically most are aquarium bred and sold through lfs that dont bother to regulate ph so they have been accustomed to lower level through breeding.

as for the angel and malawis nipping fins. if the africans are still small i doubt that they will go for the angels and the angels imo are not near fast enough to catch the malawis so i think you will be fine as long as the small ones have place to hide from the angels
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!
