today i went to buy a red map O. then i saw a cichlid which has black n yellow vertical stripes (not convicts for sure). Guys n LFS called them "Five band cichlid". But i could not find anywhere in internet about a fish under that name, but i could find a video in youtube with fish looks similar to the fish i saw in LFS. But I'm not sure they are the same type

If you know a cichlid under that name please let me know their common name, if possible more details too

looks like a datnoid to me. check out this link it may help.

www.aquaticcommunity.com/predatory/datnoid.php

if it is this species of fish then they are definetly not cichlids and come from south east asia thailand and indonesia area. they can grow to some pretty impressive sized 15" plus depending on the subspecies.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

Aggredd with Necro.
It's Datnoides microlepis, and it's a very cool fish.
Very expensive too!
I dunno what they're charging you, but where i live they're very hard to get at a descent size and even the small ones aren't cheap.
Slow growing as well. I looked into buying one as a tankmate for my Oscar, but they only had "snacksize" dats, so I didn't.
IMHO it would work as a tankmate for Oscar, cuz they show bass-like behaviour.
Do you intend to buy one?
I like those fish!!

thanx a lot for quick replies
But I don't think i can add them to my pond or tank. According to the website necro has posted datnoids are non aggressive specie. So I don't think they can defend themselves from my Os.
About 3 weeks ago i added a 4 inch knifefish. And he disappeared after the first night. Wonder where he go. Oh i think he went to the same place my fire mouth went

i am not good with scientific name of fishes but that one looks like our
kitang... being raised in the pond with barramundi (apahap and milkfish. we
normally raised them as food, not pet....

Kjack, if you have pond, they would thrive in there and could defend themselves
against oscar. they have sharp gill cover similar to barramundi, and with sturdy
skin.

Looks like a type of datnoid to me. It often referred to as "Siamese Tiger Fish" at my lfs. They live in brackish water so you may need to add aquarium salt to simulate their natural environment. I've seen many of these fishes are kept in dull or almost dark colored in my lfs.

lol, that figures.
One of the more expensive show fish over here and Paul is eating them!
Must be hard to maintain the fishkeeping hobby if your allways eating your fish!
Does this look like the fish they had for sale, KJAK?

Ah, Isn't that one known as Scatophagus (argus)?
Looks a lot like the siamese tigers, but is another fish.
Brackish as well.
But I wouldn't know if they taste well, seeing the name meeans something like
"shiteater"...

yes it is.... and yes, they are good scavenger... but it commands good
price in the market because they knew we could not get them any other
than a raised fishpond. most of our rivers and esteros are already dead.
and we used to raised them with milkfish and barramundi

btw... are we not hijacking the thread?????
