Hey guys, My mate decided because he liked my oscar so much he would go out and buy a fish and put it in his 21Litre tank. He ended up with a baby green sev about 2", I almost spewed and slaped him when i saw it; he's got white spot.

After I explained the Nitrogen cycle, water changes, tank requirements how big he gets etc, he called me a fish nerd and offered him to me and I took him home.

I've had him for 2 days now, he's in my 17ish gallon hospital tank. Tank temp is 29.8C atm, I'm not going to use meds, he is now looking heaps better and happy to see me etc, eating bio gold+ mini pellets(this looks heaps funny cause they JUST fit into his mouth.. some of the white specks have already gone.

So Ive got a few questions.

1) Food wise same as oscar? and how much do i feed a day?

2) How do I sex him/her and when/old?

3) Can he handle the higher temp for white spot treatment like Oscars?

4) Similar water conditions to Oscars?

5) what are their growth rates compared to Oscars?

6) I want to put him in my big tank I'm getting for chrissy with my oscar who is now around 5inch, this will happen around feb when its cycled, will he end up a snack if i do?
I can house him in a 55g until hes big enough if so no probs there.

also be nice to just hear what you guys think of Green Sevs, i'm already loving the little fella, hes so docile looking lol. thanks heaps

Johnny. \m/

Hi hun,

Sevs make good tank mates for Oscars... I am going to answer as many of your questions as I can.

1. Mine ate the same as my Oscars.. He would eat the pellet chunks that came out of the gills. LOL

2. Ask Necro... He sexed mine

3. Turn the heater up to 86 degrees, and add 1 tsp Aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water. make sure you have air in the tank...

4. Mine lived just peachy with my Oscars... As a matter of fact he was a big bully!

5. I got mine as an adult so can't help you here...

6. As long as you give him a place to hide I would think he should be ok with your oscar!

As far as what I think... They are cool fish, mine had to go as he was trying to breed with my Oscar and beating the crap out of Tiger... My Oscars are my first priority so he had to go! Otherwise he was nice!

thanks nicki, all that is very reassuring, I was going to put some aquarium salt in too but last week i left my cabinet open and my dogs ate my O's food, spilt the salt and chewed up my test kit forgot to buy the salt.. was my fault for not closing it lol.

I think hes happy to be in pristine water, he wasnt moving or eating when my friend had him (for 1 week), cant get over how tiny his mouth is lol I'm to used to my glutton of an O

Hes currently rubbing himself on some driftwood.
I'd post some pics but my mother borrowed my camera and is on a cruise ship in new Caledonia.
Tank is well oxygenated.

On the subject of sexing him, I'm not sure if you can tell at 2inches but he has really fluro blue cheeks with a swirly pattern and I'm pretty sure his anal fin is long and pointy and darkish yellow to blue/green on the tip, kinda hard to tell in this light as its 1:52am.
LOL at your Severum trying to breed with the O!. My eX always said wearing green means your horny. Hope my sev doesnt start the domestics with my O he/she is my aquababy and also first priority lol

And You probably still love that dog!
They're all the same.
My dog loves the Koi pellets more, though!

For sure, I never have understood people punishing animals for human error, or cutting down trees for a view. I am biased towards conservation but.

I will name the sev:

PLUR.

X2

Sevs grow slower than oscars but not massively so. If you put a 2inch sev in with a 2in oscar the oscar wont get biggwr than the sev so that he can eat the sev

Got home from work and his spots are gone, I still leave the tank at 86F/30C for 6-7 days to stop the WS from reproducing dont I ?

The life cycle of white spot varies depending on the temperature. At 26/27C the life cycle is 6 days. At 30C the life cycle is reduced so much that they dont have time to reproduce. So leave your tank at the higher temperature for 7 days (just to be sure) after all the spots have gone

Thanks delboy, I like to be sure to be sure:)

I didnt think he'd be as personable as he is, he goes nuts when he sees me like my O. His colours have darkened and has those black stripes now, The blue on his cheeks are more prominent as well. I think he was in a bit of shock before but hes settled now.
