Some fish are able to survive and live in both freshwater and saltwater, mullet, salmon eels etc, but I've never heard of converting a saltwater fish to live in freshwater. I would advice you need to buy fish that you know and live in freshwater. If you put a saltwater fish in freshwater, or vice versa, it will die eventually, & probably quite horribly.

My knowledge of marine fish is almost entirely limited to UK fish , but the photographs you have posted do look like a sergeant major fish, which is indeed marine

I looked them up for you and the Sergeant Major fish is actually a damselfish...Abudefduf saxatilis...and yes it is saltwater...I don't know how it would be able to be converted to freshwater as in the wild they live in tropical climates near reefs and are plankton feeders.

I would suggest getting it to someone with a saltwater tank or setting up a saltwater tank for it...like OFL said in the previous post it would be a painful death if left in freshwater.

i am with a bad news...most probably sergeant major pecked my baby oscar's fin right now..n now iam angry like anythin..

Re:major sergeant.. 2 years, 5 months ago #67614

That's terrible, about the pecking. I am 100% positive you can't "convert" a freshwater fish into a Marine fish. It's just not possible. They have an entirely different blood chemistry.
