that would depend on the type of cichlid you are refering to. in an oscar tank driftwood is used more for an athestic thing more than something the oscars use.
on the other hand species like jacks or sals will use the driftwood to create safe places where they will spend most of their time.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Woods looks really nice in an aquarium, it's obviously the sort of thing you would find the natural environment so is very aesthetically pleasing. Certain types of wood can be used as a buffer to alter your pH safely without using chemicals. If you have got very high pH than a large piece of bog wood is a very good idea, not only will it help with your pH, but it will also look very nice.

You can buy certain types of wood with moss already implanted into the wood, or you can just buy Java moss that literally floats around in the tank. However, stuff like this normally gets ripped to pieces and before too long you just a little pieces littering the tank making it look a mess.

X2

i dont think cichlid like or dislike the ornaments we put in the tank, the jacks or sals will be quite happy in anything they can make a safe place out of

Personally i think driftwood looks great in tanks
I can't get no sleep

driftwood in a tank is more of owners satisfaction.

one thing all fish like is somewhere to hide and check out, have a play or use to breed. depending on your type of fish some like caves others flat rocks or wood.
