I have had him for about a month or so. He has already grown and left the firemouth behind in size. But I was told he was a synspillum. Turns out from my observation, he doesnt seem to be one! Not really looking like one at this point. I have posted the pics at another forum and still having problems. So maybe someone here may know!

I am tossed up between if its a Paratheraps synspilus or a Paratheraps bifasciatus. Both should not get as big as the former. and should top out at around 8-10 inches.

What do you all think?

This is when I first got him

this is a month later, (took these last night) You can see a size and coloration difference already!

SOOOO... what do we think??

to me it doesnt look like a bifasciatus but more like a synspilus. but there is something that isnt quite right about that one either. maybe as it ages i could give a more concrete id but at this point i cannot be 100% sure.
there is also the possibility that its a hybrid......

@win..........its a lot nicer than convicts are.......

I agree it is ugly. It really looks like a weird colored terror.

Haven't got a clue. The first picture looked a bit like a blue acara but then it changed dramatically. After doing some comparisons I would say it looks more like a Paratheraps synspilus than the other one you mentioned, but like I say, I haven't got a clue. Cris is the one that should be able to answer your question

the only thing worth having that even closely resemble a convict is an hrp. and with them only if their first or second generation from wild caught. no matter how nice you think your walmart cons are, they are just plain cons.

to the op my appologies for derailing your thread

the op physically asked what we thought of it too and if we could id it. i thought it was ugly, and i guessed the type. just as OP asked. i wasnt rude to OP i just dont like the look of that fish, it looks kind of like a hybrid pink/black convict in the way that one patch of wierd pinkish fleshtone color behind the gill plate is compared to the rest of the fish infact reminds me alot of the pink/black convict offspring i saw as feeders in a tank, they were indeed ugly. no offense. that is not those tho, that just reminded me of it. sorry to have seen things get taken personally. i just wouldnt have expected that from you, since your a mod. i hope you get over it, i already have.
