Marshal created the topic: LFS Convicts

I went into a LFS & they have a big tank with loads of convicts but it looked odd as they were all around the edges & there was a pile of Plecs in the corner. I then saw there were 2 convicts right at the front centre of the the tank & it took me a few seconds to realize what was actually happening, they had loads of little fry they were protecting. I've heard convicts breed easily but it really surprised me that they would breed in a tank in a fish store where they are for sale. :)

I then saw another tank with a foot long Oscar with HITH & a Sev that was battered with torn fins & my happy smile disappeared. :(

most living things will breed, regardless of circumstance. Think of feral cats, or guppies. Neither really needs good conditions to spawn. Convicts are the same. While very cute, I feel very sorry for those fish. Leaving the others in the tank like that seems harsh.

It's things like this that has me only going to the pet shop if I absolutely MUST.

Always breaks my heart to see poor beat up oscars that have been neglected by previous owners.

I feel really bad for that tank with the convicts. I had a pair of jewels that were breeding and sometimes the female would chase the male off of the spawns. So I can only imagine how aggressive convicts are.

Did I hear something about a new tank on the horizon to rescue an oscar

I wish, I have a new tank planned but no way I can keep a another tank but believe me that's all I've been thinking about is 'where can I fit a tank to do a rescue'

I would say generally that this is a good store, it's actually where I got my Oscar, but it is sad to see fish in a bad state & as far as I know the store may have taken them on from someone who got them into that state.
