You are going to cycle the tank 1st, before adding the cichlids, correct?

I don't think I would add Keyhole cichlids to this mix; they are really an overgrown dwarf cichlid, & are very timid ( I kept mine w/ Angelfish in an Amazonian tank).

You certainly can keep most fish in a wide range of PH values, but for them to look & do their best, I recommend keeping them in a PH that they prefer; SA cichlids, especially ones that are Amazonian in ancestry, really do better in soft, acidic water. I kept & bred my Oscars in "blackwater" (filtered through peat), & they absolutely thrived n these conditions.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Thanks Rocksor and Fishguy for your help.

Yes. I will be cycling the tank before putting any fish in.

It sounds like I have a bit of thinking to do but that I have a few options:

1. Keeping more than two large cichlids wich would mean frequent water changes.

2. Keeping one large and one medium sized cichlid. Oscar and Geophagus Brasiliensis for exampel.

3. Not keeping a large cichlid, but a few medium sized cihlids. Dwarf cihlids maybe...

It will be a tough decision. On one hand I like the large cichlids, Oscars and GT's. On the other I like watching a tank with a large variety of cichlids that breed, and creates territories.

This will be my initial set up.

2x Jack D's
2x Convicts (breeding pair)
1x Pleco or Ancistrus

As you can see I'm going Central American. Love the JD's and I held two a couple of years ago. I might start off with 5-6 JD's to try and get a breeding pair and then add the Cons.

I know that I will miss the Oscar until a get a new one but for now; they will have to wait.

Thank you for all your help.
