Rock,
I guess we better get our RT's breeding!! (I read that they are declining in the wild). B) How old is this article, still using Cichlasoma nomenclature??

Correct me if I'm wrong, aren't they SA(Ecuador, Bolivia)??

I did notice something cool about mine......when they are in "aggressive" mode(as in when they were feuding w/ the RT Black shark!!), even when they are as small as mine, they get an intense orange/red tint to them, & their stripes get very intense as well. Did you notice this?? (This is my 1st go-round w/ Festae.... I love 'em!!) ;)

Do you know @ what size they will breed?? They do look very similar to Convicts in body shape, so I was kinda hoping soon........

aw crap...posted in the wrong forum.

I see the stripes more when they are relaxed. When spooked they fade pale. The red does show up more on the aggressor. I don't see the stripes as much when they get mad.

From what I read and talked to the breeder of my pair, females will breed at around 5-6". So to reach that size, almost a year old.
