S.S. created the topic: SEVERUM types - Who is Who?

Hi there,

I’ve been studying the Heros type, those known as "SEV's" however I have to many doubts about the types that exist and those that are a cross between different types or even those that are “made” by genetic intervention.

What I’ve found so far:

There are 3 main species usually known as SEV’s according to fishbase:

- Heros Severus (banded ciclid): www.fishbase.org/summary/Heros-severus.html

- Heros Efasciatus: www.fishbase.org/summary/Heros-efasciatus.html

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEESE TWO? WHAT IS THE WILD FORM? MOST SITES CALL THEM HEROS EFASCIATUS (SEVERUM)

This is the green WILD SEV? Type Efasciatus or Severus? Or are they in fact the same? Note the difference in pictures of fishbase.

The Golden SEV, he isn’t from nature? He is a cross from what types?

The 3rd type:
- Heros Notatus: www.fishbase.org/summary/Heros-notatus.html

And then I’ve been seeing some:

- Rotkeils

- “Total eruption” Maybe a cross from Notatus and Gold?

- Sp Inirida

ARE there any more types?

Please comment because I am trying to understand this best and put up a SEV´s tank and I don’t want non natural types.

By the way about all types there are different sizes since 20cm (8inc) to 30 (12inc) or more, so maybe they have behavior differences too, so I’d like to know what’s the:
- Most peacefull or less aggressive?
- Most tolerant on plants?
- Less dangeorous to small community fish in the tank?

And are all of them single or pair species? None likes being in a group?

If you keep 2 or more without beiing a pair is it best to have all females or males?

THANKS!

Most aquarists will see Heros Efasciatus. They spawn on the substrate. Heros severus is a mouth brooder and typically only seen when they are imported from the wild or as offspring from a breeder who imported them from the wild.

Gold severum is made from chosing characteristics for the gold color. The same for the Rokteil, Red severum, and red shoulder severum.

Treat all severums as mildly aggressive cichlid who will eat any fish that can fit in its mouth. They will be territorial, and each one will have an individual personality like all cichlids. They will be aggressive towards one another so when you get some make sure that you have an equal mix and don't have something like 5 green and one yellow. The yellow one will be bullied for looking different from the rest.

Maybe a total eruption wont be bullied by 3 rotkeils because he gets bigger than the others or am I wrong?

You won't know until you try. But you have to be ready to separate them if the total eruption sustain too much damage and is no longer eating or if the total eruption bullies all of the other severums to the point that they no longer eat.

There are no guarantees with cichlids.
