Now thats a pretty fish, nicer than the big boys I think. Very slow growing and 10-12ins full size. Is that correct Tom? Would they accept tankmates in a suitable size tank?

They can be very hard on tank mates. Growth is very slow after the first couple inches. 12" is a very large one ten inches more common. Hardy tank mates of at least the same size and with lots of caves and escape areas. Midas and rd are mentioned as good tank mates, jags as well.

Cichlasoma grammodes, also called the mexican flag cichlid, the mini dovii, or a nasty sob. has most of the dovii attitude in a smaller package. not the same types of colors but a nice looking fish just the same. still needs a big tank and great filters and carefully chosen mates are possible ...where most dovii just kill everything in the tank.

Can you tell a big difference in behavior between the fish you bough online and the once you caught in Costa Rica ? And if so , what is the biggest behavioral difference ?

Wild fish a a bit skittish for awhile, and they defend whatever cave they chose more aggressively than captive bred. Some wild fish are difficult to feed prepared foods . They get a longer qt than regular fish. Wild fish really get better color once they start to eat good food, and they tend to be tougher and heal fasqter

The umbee are starting to relax in the tank now. Look at the color on this one.
