im planning on getting a jack dempsey but the store that sells them fairly small. Is it ok that i put the JD in a 37 gallon with my goldfish just until he is big enough to go in with my oscar?

How big is the Oscar and what size tank is he in??

The jack Dempsey may kill the goldfish.

As long as the Oscar can't eat the jack Dempsey in one bite I think it would be OK. Jacks are tough fish a smaller jd would go fine with an Oscar as long as the Oscar doesn't see it as food. I think this would be your best bet as long as the tank is suitable for both fish.

Hello, first order of biz.. avoid that fishstore for any advice. Totally wrong. First I would not put a JD in a tank of any size with a goldfish. Goldfish is a cold water fish, JD needs 15-20 degrees more than a goldfish should have. A 55 gal tank is ok for JD alone or Oscar alone, and Oscar will need bigger after about 10-12 months. I do keep Oscar and JD together successfully, but in 6 and 7 foot tanks. The 37g will suffice the JD for a short while, a couple months max. Then you need at least 120gals to keep both, and that will become too small before they each reach full size. A healthy Oscar will easily reach 14ins, a JD male 10 or better. You need lotsa room.

I may not be the Boss, but I'm ALWAYS right!

Dont buy the JD if you can only afford a 55g. Ive kept an oscar and JD in a 5 ft 110g tank with no aggression issues. The two JD that I have owned would just stay in the corner and only come out to eat. I found them pretty boring. They were both pretty skittish and didnt live ip to the aggressiveness that I expected.

yeah. bad advice. a 55 is too small for both fish.

if you plan on getting a bigger tank - get the tank first then fish.

your tank may look empty if it has just one 4 inch oscar in it now - but youll find in healthy conditions that the oscar will grow very fast.
