It has been awhile and I hope everyone is doing well, but I was hoping some of you can give me some advice on good beginner aquarium fish for my girlfriend. Her tank is going to be 20-30 gallons.

Maybe a Convict Cichlid Pair. They are very hardy and would do okay in a 20-30 gallon tank for quite a while.

i googled just for fun, and this is what came up:

* Good First Fish:
cyprinids, Corydorus catfish and rainbowfish.
* Good Second Fish:
loaches, dwarf pl*cos, tetras, cichlids, anabantids and livebearers.
* Bad First Fish:
goldfish, piranhas, knife fishes, hatchet and pencil fishes, elephant noses and baby whales, Chinese algae eaters, bala sharks, iridescent sharks, glass cats, pl*cos, long-whiskered catfish, red-tailed catfish, spiny eels, painted glassfish, dyed fish, brackish fish and saltwater fish.

the list of bad first fish is quite correct, allthough i never heard of pl-star-co's

Here the article with the what and why:

Namaste my friend, In my experience you cant go wrong with Convicts and Cory's.
Both are pretty resilient fish and would be very forgiving for a newbie
plus they are both active and beautiful additions to a tank imo
well best of luck my friend and i hope all goes well.

Guppies are fun to play with if your new..breed like wildfire and pretty hardy.

Also you can get some amazing colours if you mix them up a little!

I think a maybe a couple of discus fish would
be amazing i love those things i personaly dont own
any but am thinking about some
and they would need a heavy duty filter they wouldnt be hard to take care of if you put them with community fish discus are cichilds and like soft water and eighty to eighty four degree water the only thing that sucks with discus is they are so damn expencive and you have to order most of them online and over nite shipping is alot of money

i wouldnt recommend discus for beginners.. those are expensive fish and not rated as easy to keep. it depends on wat she likes. she can go for a mod size single fish, a pair of convicts or a school of small colourful fishes.

X2

If you are not an experienced fish keeper keeping discus will be an expensive mistake. Also 30g is not big enough for keeping discus
