You see articles like that all over the place. In fact I think they just get copied and recopied all over the web. There are many similar crappy ones on ehow.com

The worst omission is that there is no mention at all of cycling the tank before putting in any fish.

This is one reason why we should not be too harsh on newcomers. It's perfectly possible to go on the internet and read 100 articles about how to care for your fish and still have no idea what they are doing. On top of rubbish advice from most LFS, people can try and do the responsible thing, spend hours on research and be clueless. Publishing crap like that article is very irresponsible.

Oscar fish are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, noise and light, so keep the tank in a place where there will be minimal external influences on the environment. Place the tank away from doors, windows and vents and out of high traffic areas.

I love how 'concerned' the author is with insulating the plastic bag when bringing the oscar home to put...in an uncycled tank. Oh wait, I forgot I waited a couple of weeks for everything to be 'in order' first, so it should work out just fine.


BTW, my Peacock cichlid oscar looks a little funny compared to my other peacock cichlid oscars.
