TOPIC: Home Pesticides and Fish

Home Pesticides and Fish 1 year, 8 months ago #114507

Recently I found a few fleas on my bulldog, ogie, and after removing them I wanted to make sure none had a chance to infest my home. I bug bombed my bedroom and laid down flea killing powder in my living room, etc. However to be sure I would like to bomb there as well. My issue is I am concerned about the fishtank as it's in the living room.

I had planned on turning off air pumps and covering the tank and filter outlets with saran wrap, several bedsheets and sheets Most info I found indicated that this would be fine...however I was wondering if anyone had previous experience with this so as to make sure. I certainly don't want to make an error that kills my fish. Any UK advice(?) as from what I've read it's more endemic there due to smaller, more squalid home conditions...

I think fish tanks are not as fragile as we sometimes think. my wife has used a fair amount of fly spray in the room with my tank. I hate her doing it, but it hasn't done any harm so far. the bed sheet idea should combat a great deal if any did reach the tank. I would say like you already know, just take as much care as you can, and have done.

it is not neccesary to do what you are suggesting

Im in England and we have several brands of flea killers. One is frontline and the other is stronghold. google them. What you do is empty a small amount of liquid onto the pet and it kills all fleas for up to 2 months.

The bugbomb thing would probably be ok, covering the fish tanks would be a very good idea

I have frontline pills I gave the dog so I'm not too concerned about him getting infested again, however my concern was that there is possibly flea eggs/larvae that are in the carpet/house. I obviously don't want the fleas anywhere in the house, even if my dog is immune. I have already laid down a full can of powder in the living room...so much so that it pretty much fogged up the room for a good while. I had covered the tank while I was doing this.

And marcus, I agree with the statement that we sometimes worry too much about that stuff. Many say never to use any type of aerosol products in the room although I have used aerosol cleaning sprays on my tank glass and such with no ill effects--my only concern was that concentrated pesticide to a fairly large degree might be a cause for greater concern. I'll probably do as I originally intended and take precautions.

Frontline doesnt make your dog immune, it kills the fleas. If you use frontline regularly you wont have any fleas in your house. If you do get some in the house they will jump onto your dog and die.

frontline.uk.merial.com/html/all-round-p...how-does-it-work.asp

I was told by a vet that there are different varieties of fleas for different animals. A dog flea prefers dogs, cat flea cats and human fleas prefer humans. A dog flea will only bite humans if there hasnt been a dog around for a while (so you wont get bit). So treat your dog regularly with frontline and your house will be flea free

Yeah that's what I meant, just poorly worded there.

These fleas have been on ogie and have bitten me. I've seen a few bites (itchy little red pinpricks), and actually saw one land on my arm, and when I slapped it there was a small red pinprick that itched afterwards. Ogie sleeps in my bed with me so I assume that's how that happened. I was told fleas will bite whomever, dog or human. They want blood, and while the dog's hair is more appealing as a general home...they can also infest/bite humans.

I've never had this happen with a dog before, surprisingly.

It must be the new walk path I take. It's not really near woods or anything, but really the only thing I can think of. He rarely comes into contact with other dogs, although there is a large field out back where people in my apartment complex take thier dogs to do their business. He goes out there too, as aside from a walk it's the only place for them to relieve themselves. There's a distinct possibility they are present there too.

Anyways, I bombed the living room. I covered the filter, top and sides of the tank with cut plastic trash bags and taped them to the walls and tank. and then covered the whole stand and tank with a towel on top and then 3 bedsheets.

I kept the air stone running as it was under the cabinet and I wanted to make sure there was still plenty of oxygen in the tank, what with all the plastic covering and all being on overnight. It turned out just fine...and in retrospect I probably overdid it--a sheet or 2 would have probably been more than enough protection. So if anyone ends up in the same position, don't believe all the 'horror stories' you find online about people losing 400 dollars worth of fish by bombing. Just take normal common sense precautions, you don't need to move the tank.

i work in dog grooming parlour and i cannot stress enough how important frontline is and its worth the money spending on it. It is not toxic it kills fleas, ticks, lice everything I would recommend thou investing in tea tree oil shampoo as it deters fleas and will be great for bulldog skin condition and coat. Just grab cheap bottle from supermarket it doesnt have to be expensive or esp for pets but it is fantastic stuff and just use when you next bath your dog.

I too dont really like using fly spray, air freshers or polish near my tanks as it concerns me.
I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order

Re: Home Pesticides and Fish 1 year, 8 months ago #115562

One disturbing thing about all this was a friend of mine has 2 dogs and I was telling her about it...and she game me some Hartz Ultra Guard flea and tick drops that he had left over in a purple applicator squeeze tube. Before administering it I did some online research on it to be sure and I found this:

www.hartzvictims.org/

Frontline is what I decided on and is what Ogie's using now. As for my friend I let her know about it, obviously her dogs showed no ill effects and she meant well...I'm just glad I always do my research. I value that dog as much or more than most people I know, family included, and I would be absolutely inconsolable if I hurt him in some way. I mean, he essentially is my family. I've always thought of my dogs in this way--but Ogie is even more special to me since he's an english bully (always the breed I've wanted most) and he's got such a distinctive personality.

The real shame in all this is that Hartz still makes and sells this sh*t, even though most if not all pet stores refuse to carry it.

I try and avoid that near my tanks too, but I think that falls more along the lines of common sense i.e. don't spray pesticides near the tank etc.

Frontline is the only thing i use....fleas can not live in your house without a dog....if your dog has been treated with frontline effectively there is no dog.
And like del said any left will jump on the dog and die very shortly afterwards.

Fleas dont infest people..period...however they WILL feed from humans if the chance is there as iv been bitten myself.

Totally no need to use a Bomb..

A word of Advice johnny Dont let the dog sleep on your bed....it has been linked to skin conditions and Eczema and is generally unhygienic to be honest...
