I brought home a bag of feeder guppies for my turtle today and in it was a very small chiclid looking fish.
1/4 inch in length, greenish, chiclid shaped body with 7-8 faded black verticle stripes and a black dot on his dorsal fin.

I am curious to know what this fish may be. THANKS!

the only way to really identify it would be to see a pic. your description though fairly detailed cant compare to a photo.

guessing is difficult. there are a lot of fish
with the same discription. picture is a must.

its gonna be hard to get a pic of that little guy. perhaps its some sort of baby cichlid that somehow got mixed in. one greenish cichlid with stripes is a severum. but im not sure if they would develop color at that size. check them out on google. dont feed it to the turtles!!!

Someone at work said it might be a sunfish and if it is to destroy it. why is that?

i think they are referring to what id call a sunny that are local to many lakes in the us. in that case, theres not much you could do with it. maybe set it free in the wild if your in the us. your description didnt sound much like a sunfish, check out some pics on google and see if you could match them up.

So the pet shop gave you the guppies and a mystery fish! Weird!! haha
