BlueMoonJay created the topic: New Texas Cichlid

So I purchased a new Texas cichlid that will eventually have a 75g tank all to himself. Maybe 2" in size right now. Currently sharing a tank with my salvini (salvini not happy about it). Does anyone have personal experience with these guys? I've read a bit about them, but would rather see personal opinions about them on here.

I had one many years ago, as mean as they come, very aggressive. Generally pissed all the time. Sal should be able to hold its own til Tex gets the size advantage. They are a great CA, very attractive as well imo. Toss a pic up and Darth will most likely sex it for ya. They also grow fast, not quite Oscar fast, but dont take long to hit the 8-10in mark.

What do you mean texas cichlid? What's the scientific name? Not all Texas cichlid should be maintained at tropical temperatures year round. (75F-85F).

If he means H. Cyanoguttatus, then it should be kept as you would a natural CA?

Those fish do better with a cool down period for a few months, which is what they experience in the wild. Low 60s to High 90s.

Probably not, they tend to use carpintis or other variants for red texas.

Off topic, apologies BlueMoon, but Rock, what size tank is your Jag in? Tankmates? Territory issues?

240g with 2 festae, convict, and green flier

4 feet of the 8 foot tank is his, and 80% of the time he's around that area. He will only let the female festae into that area. He is pretty relaxed to the other fish, and will only rush the other fish if the female festae is showing dominance to the other fish. He hasn't killed any cichlid or lip locked with any of them. Of course he is the biggest at around 11-12". Everyone else is half his size.

My guy is about the same size alone in a 125. I would like to mix him with a couple others. I have an 8-10ft tank planned for the future. I was thinking female Dovii, my 8in Midevil and a Tri-Mac , H. Cyanno or Tiger Mota. Never any guarantees I know, but what ya think?
