A fish in cycle is a lot of work. You should have a test kit so that you know to do 50% water changes once ammonia or nitrites hit 0.5ppm.

Maybe, I actually think it's less work than a fishless cycle.......but I would have chosen some sort of hardy live-bearer rather than a FM, who more than likely won't survive a FI cycle in a smal aquarium like a 20GL.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

In the fishless cycle you don't have to change the water for a few weeks. Initial testing for ammonia can wait a week or 2 when you get ammonia up to 2ppm-4ppm. I prefer the lower half since there is no reading for ammonia between 4-8ppm, and the cycle will stall over 4ppm.

I've done the fish in cycle with cichlids and barbs (20g tank), and you always have to watch the ammonia and nitrites everyday (not letting it get above 0.5ppm), which is more work than the first couple of weeks in the fishless cycle.
