Streamlyne created the topic: HELP - URGENT | Black Ghost Knife not moving

Today I bought a Black Ghost Knife. About 20cm long.

I put him into a new 3ft tank setup that i've just set up. Water quality is fine, temp etc too, and has been conditioned.

I have a cichlid with him, who's going fine, and hasn't bothered the Knife at all.

The Knife has been fine. For the first 12 hours, he was swimming around happily - not a problem at all.
I went to bed 4 hours ago, and woke to see him lying on his side on the bottom of the tank, gills moving faster than what i'd say is normal (not an expert though)
If I nudge him, he takes off, swims a bit, then eventually lies down.

I'm aware they have strange behaviour and often sleep like this, but i'm really worried.

I realise i've made the rookie mistake of adding fish to a tank that had just been set up, and have moved him to a smaller pre-set up tank for the time being.

Please respond ASAP.

Hi there, just some quick questions so we can help you.

What are you using to test your water? Test strips are inaccurate, we need to know your ammonia, nitrate, and nitrites to get a better understand, a water test kit is the best.

3 foot tank will not be long enough for the knife in the long run. You will need to upgrade ASAP.

Knife fish are nocturnal, they do not like light. Do you have a tunnel for him? Are your lights on?

Also, what is your regular water change schedule?

The light was on, should have had that off. WIll do asap.

I only have test strips, and they came back fine.

I will eventually upgrade for sure.

I've only bought the fish/tank today, so no water changes have happened.

Wow, well shit.

He just died.

I watched the air bubbles leave his mouth..

I'm going to just stick to the fish I know and try nothing new from now on.

hi and welcome to OFL

when you mention just setup ~ did you mean it's cycled?
please replace the strips with a liquid test kit ~ in the mean-time i would bring your water to a local fish shop to get it tested (make sure it's a liquid test kit) and let us know what the readings are...

if you just purchased the knife, there's a soaking period that most fish goes through....yes do turn the light off and let them do their thing....

Cheers for that.. Yeah, it's devastating to be honest. I've wanted a Ghost Knife for a while now, I just rushed things and feel pretty horrible for it.

I'll be using this site more often now. I swear I was a member a while ago, don't remember my details though.. So yeah..

That's too bad you lost him. Get the liquid kit as mentioned. Test strips are as accurate as sticking your finger in and guessing. I agree that you should use this site more often. You will all the info you need here and more. And unlike most sites... you won't get conflicting advice here, only the correct advice. Maybe some variances time to time but never conflicting and always correct. Welcome back to OFL.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

Sorry about the Knife.. the cichlid you have may also face a similar fate with an uncycled tank. Monitoring the water and changing frequently will be mandatory while your tank settles out. What cichlid is it? What's the volume of the tank? Filtration?
