MetalHead88 created the topic: painting the back of the tank

alright - so theres been a few things that ive been wanting to do to one of my tanks - the first thing is paint the back of the tank and the 2nd is to try out sand as substrate. i cant justify tanking down a larger tank just to paint the back of it, or attempt to remove every single piece of gravel. but a 10 gallon tank???? i can easily take that thing down and throw filter, heater, and fish into a rubermaid container for a couple of days while the paint is drying and the tank is set back up.

i see no reason to do this to one of my larger tanks. but since an inevitable move is in the future, this may be something that i'll be doing to other tanks in the future so i might as well give it a shot with something i can handle over the weekend.

so here lies my questions -
what kind of paint do i use??? where can i get it?? and how do i apply it? what kind of brush and so on is best.
what color? i was thinking a shade of blue - probably a darker one to go with a light shade of sand.

so yeah - any advise, suggestions, or comments i'd really appreciate it.

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

latex paint - no spray paint if the tank's occupied - don't need to tear down a setup to paint the back of the tank - just remember to open some windows to ventilate -
use a roller and tape up the corners for a nicer look.....
i would prefer painting it black

or is latex paint better?

i think im going to take the whole tank down either way - it'll be easier to change the substrate and ill have to at least move the tank either way to get to the back of the tank.

since its such a small tank - it'll only take a few minutes to get everything into a rubermaid containter

On both of mine I used black spray paint (rust oleum ). The trick is to make sure the glass is clean and dry, no fingerprints or water marks.

I love it. I would never use a stick on back ground again, I did a a few different shade's of of blue on a 10 gallon tank for comparisons but in the end I went with black.
I also switched over to pool filter sand last year and I'll never use gravel again.

after a bit of thought i think im going to go with black.

ive gone with nothing as the background....i like it - but its impossible to keep clean since its so hard to get back there.

if this goes well ill slowly be painting tanks as i move or replace them in the future.

The black background will help hide algae growth on the back glass.
