Jnet knows me best, and is is right, if a Pleco has 11 or more back- finspines, it belongs to the "common" family.
Any less spines and it's usually Hypostomus.

But I.D-ing has not become easier since i came to this site.
We had about 400 species of Pleco's, now, 7 years later there's allmost 1100...
Every L number was originally given, until genetic and topographical research pointed out what family and what species it was.
Then the L numbers where supposed to be re-used...didn't happen.
But the L numbers stayed, but having f.e. an L200 , yes, you got a yellow phantom, but is it bari-ancistrus or hemi-ancistus, and from which river or estuari???
 :S
Oh, well, we had about 4000 members then, now passed the 11.000, so it makes the game more interresting. ;)
