Wow! That is such a cool looking fish. My son put in a request for puffer fish some time ago, this will only help to encourage that. What kind of set up do you have for him. Awesome photos too. :)

Scruffy is a Monotrete Baileyi or common named 'hairy puffer' that is about 3.5"-4". He lives in a 40B by himself and it has an AC110 for filtration due to the type of foods he eats and the waste it creates. These guys are viscous eaters and are surprisingly fierce even though they look 'cute'. They are total freshwater and do not need very large tanks, in fact I could have housed him in a 29g without a problem. One reason I choose this one is because they are a lurker type puffer that does not tend to have issue with its teeth. So no real need to feed snails or do dentistry on him.

Very cool little guy.

Lurker type puffers like Scruffy are pretty inactive but it works out well since he is not in a high traffic area (home office) and I stop in and see him a few times a day. He does have a great personality when he is hungry and will come and beg just like an Oscar. Very interesting to watch them eat. Those teeth of theirs can tear up pretty solid foods like shrimp with no problem. Then after they eat their bellies are all distorted until the food settles in.

Thanks for that info. Will definitely keep the HP in mind if we ever get a puffer. That he is totally FW is a bonus as I don't really have any desire for the added complexity of brackish water fish.

Basically there are a few puffers that would be like mine that are easy to care for, not require huge tanks and are 100% freshwater. The Congo, Arrowhead, Dragon and Hairy are all great puffer that would be nice starters.

Great looking fish. I love puffers. They are like little submarines.
