Darcie created the topic: Help with leopard sailfin pleco please

Had him for approx 4 years

Changed my sand to white Silica 2/3 weeks ago and last week I noticed he wasn't eating his wafers or veg ( not like him )
His poo became white and I thought he was just gobbling sand with his food

Gross ..... but I split his poo and it was just sand

I have changed the sand to the one I had before and now his poo is that colour now but he is eating
Has the sand done damage to him ????

Please Help I can't lose him

I've checked my water , everything is great

I've heard of plecos eating sand and they were ok....I have no idea though!

Theory... The pleco could more easily see and find left over food on the white sand.. thus he ate that and sand at the same time.. and then ignored your waffers?

I have no clue! Hopefully someone else will know!

Am I understanding correctly? He IS eating again but his poo is still like it was before ... sand colored? If so, how long since you changed from the silica back to the old sand?

Hi

Thanx for the reply

I changed the sand from silica white to normal sand last Saturday, he still had a few white poops after

Now he is eating a little but his poo is now the colour of the sand I put in Saturday

I gave him some pear last night and he's demolished it but his wafers are still there, I've left them in the tank and will check if he's eaten them when I finish work

I've ordered some Seachem Garlic Guard to soak his wafer in

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Is his poo the color of the sand or is it sand? Could it be mucous? I've seen fish with intestinal infections that have white mucous and some with tan mucous. If it is mucous, I'd recommend a large water change and maybe treatment with something like API general cure (metronidazole and praziquantel). I'm currectly treating some mollies with that.

The garlic should make the wafers hard to resist. I'd try that first. You might also consider epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) to work as a laxative. You can soak the wafers in a solution or put it in the tank.

First, make sure there are no water quality issues. Dissolve one teaspoon of epsom salt for every ten gallons in some water and then add the solution to the tank. If there is no improvement within 2 days, add another teaspoon per 10 gallons. After 2 additional days, perform a 50% water change to reduce the amount of magnesium in the water. Then return to your regular water change schedule.

If there's still a problem after that, I'd consider the metro.

Just throwing this out there....are you sure you have the species correct? Some plecos change food preferences as they age.

This is very true. I also have a large Sailfin, older than yours. He will eat algae wafers, but requires more nutrition to support his large size. Veg and fruit chunks are needed. Also important is a big piece of natural driftwood. Plec needs to rasp on that, get some wood into him. Its an important digestive aid. My guys poo is also white-ish most of the time, but not from sand, as his tank has large round river pebbles as substrate.
Quick addition... what size tank is he in? Tankmates? Gibby plecs are a HUGE strain on the bioload of any tank. Water quality degrades fast with these big fellas.
