jnet created the topic: now my plecs died :(

2weeks on from when my oscar died my plec dies :(

Now I am really worried that things are a miss, I did test and nitrates are 0-5 which makes sense this a big tank with not many fish in it anymore.

My plec was around 18 to 20 years old but the last few days its been acting odd. Like resting in spots in the tank that it doesnt normally sit. It did look quite bloated and we were a little concerned. I dont over feed my fish.

We unplugged my lights after my oscar died as one of the bulbs has broke and wondered if electric was bouncing in to tank.

Do you think something is up with the tank or just a coincidence?

Also I have noticed this limp under side fin perhaps a tumour? Can parasites etc get in to tank via wc because I havent added anything to tank in 6months.

here are pics.

really sad Ive had this little fishy since I was 11 years old RIP Harley

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

Wow sorry for your loss. That's tough after having him so long. He was an old bugger. Not sure what that is on his underside. May have just been coincidence that he now passed as well. I hope so and hope there is nothing funny going on in your tank.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

Ugh. That is too bad! Sorry for your loss. He was surely an old boy. (I hadn't realize that plecs could live that long so did some reading up)

Is this your plywood tank you are having your trouble with? (I can't remember if you still have that or not). Maybe you should probably check some of your other water conditions beyond the usual trifecta (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)?

Sorry again. :( Losing a childhood pet is heartbreaking. I lost my 18 year old cat a couple of years ago and still miss him.

Its not my plywood we had to dismantle that, its my 5foot 400litre tank, I'm really worried about my Raphael catfish he's about same age as the plec. This tank had my favourite fish in, now I'm down to a JD, rainbow shock and my catfish. And my RAF's been moving around a bit more than normal. Can electric cause bloating?

The JD and rainbow keep fighting now as the Oscar has gone and he kept the peace.

As for the parasites you had wondered about, I really don't think that's much of a concern since you hadn't added anything to the tank in so long. I think there's a good chance that your two fish dying was just a coincidence. I don't believe electricity would have had anything to do with it or all your fish would have been affected.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Just in case, keep an eye out for anything unusual, but I think and hope that things will be ok.

If you think it's bloat you need to add some more fiber to the diet.. What I'm wondering is if something recently changed with you water ...

swelling is one sign of a bacterial infection

parasites can also take a while to take its toll on his host like years

Either way, being as old as the plec was, it's age alone makes it more susceptible to disease/parasite/infection than a plec half its age.

Sorry for your loss.

see I was thinking bacterial and thats why I was worrying about dropsy, would that happen with WC? Like if something was in the water?

Should I treat my tank just incase or do you think a big wc is worth doing?

clean the filters and do a big water change.

treating dropsy can be difficult, and it can destroy your bacteria colony. If you decide to go this route, read this link about what to use, basically you will have to find gram positive and gram negative antibiotics that can be mixed at the same time.
