Water change schedule question

ehh created the topic: Water change schedule question

I was wondering if doing one 50% change a week is more beneficial than doing two 25% changes a week.
I can see how removing more nitrates at once is good but then it builds up longer.

Any thoughts?

Doing 2 x 25% will keep the water TDS and nitrates stable than a single 50% in the course of 1 week.

If nitrates grew consistently 3 ppm a day, by the 3rd day you would get 9ppm, do a 25% change, and it is down to 6.75ppm, by day 7 it will be 15 ppm, and do another 25% and it is 11ppm.

For a 50% water change, you would have 10ppm at day 7. You have effectively reduce more nitrates with a larger change.

Would you see that difference on the test kit...no. Would you have to do an extra water changes to keep it below 20ppm over the course of the year, yes.

In the end, it's what you have time for.
