i had an idea last night, as i was laying in bed thinking about how the pet shops dont properly warn people what they are buying when they purchase an Oscar.

i thought about my LFS and how only a few days before i had seen a couple contemplating a 4 inch O.
this is what i heard ( we have a tank that big (2 ft) we can get one of thosse)
i looked at them and said 'they get huge and you'll need a huge tank in a year'
well i dont think they bought the O.

i was thing of asking the LFS if i could prepare them a pamphlet on proper O care and keeping, that they can guve to people when they buy or are thinking of buying an O

if i were to do this, and i still have to ask them yet, but i was hoping i could use the info from this site to be included in this pamphlet.

i just want to do something to help people understand their newly bought Oscar fish so that they dont have the same problems i did when first becoming an Oscar owner.

what do you guys think?

I don't think it is a bad idea... But I do think it is a persons responsibility to research what they are doing. Especially when it comes to another living thing. Fish dogs cats are not an impulse buy.

i know this, but i would feel alot better knowing that people were getting the info they needed.

alot of people think that an O is just like a guppie or goldfish, but we all know what the difference is.

they think they can buy an O, take it home, put it in a 2 ft tank or sometimes less with barely enough filtration for a frog, feed it goldfish or tropical flakes and then wonder why it dies a few weeks after.

either that or they survive but live in horrible condidtions because the owner dosnt have the money to upgrade their tank and filter as their O grows and this porr fish suffers for years with ill health swimming in its own poo.

sorry to go on i get a bit emotional about proper pet care.. lol

We all get emotional about this subject, As I said I don't think it is a bad idea... If The LFS will allow it!

ive got my speech ready to convince the fish shop owner.

i know that she is fairly reasonable and dosnt seem like the kind to not care about where the O's are going (she had a breeding pair on display but they have since died and no full grown O is there to show people)
what i want to put in it is

: correct feeding
: tank size needed
: temperament
: lifespan and full size
: how to cycle tank
: filtration and water changes

and just a few quick facts to give people and an idea about their new pet..
