ok so i go to my lfs and see this new style of guppy now it may have been around but i just started to see them popping up i def say that whith my live planted tank it def looks good and well i have decided to get two to add more color.
Now on fridays me and a buddy go looking at the lfs in denver and this place we stop to get him fish for his tanks i saw in the owners show tank that has been full of fish a new addition. Now she has in the tank carnals rummy nose and neon tetras and many others including angle fish its a great looking tank but she now has discus in there and they are leaving the other fish alone and it got me thinking is could i add them to my live planted tank also what are your thoughts.

Discus are fragile fish and demand a lot of your waterquality.
I heard of WC scheduales that are ridiculous in my eyes.
Plus they need an adapted Ph, i think.
But I'm no expert on the matter.
i sure you'll get theinfo you need soon.

im almost tempted to set up my 30 tall but with the fact of a gf and her having a baby on the way well ltes just say she is hollering no and has drawn a line in the preverbial sand, cause she knows it would be a discus tank but on the other hand i can say the stand is well crap and the 30 talls are so unstable. but omg makes me think of the show tank i saw at the lfs that is 7x8x3 with discus baby arowanas and freshwater stingrays.

I'm just glad my wife supports all my fish madness.
i went from zero to 1000L+ within 2 years and from the looks of it ,it doesn't end here.
But she's fine with me planning for a huge tank in the future, as long as she gets a new couch on the opposite side of the tank.
But it's gonna take time, money and dedication to go bigger!
Hope your GF comes around, play it smart!lol
You'll have your new tank in no time!

I see why yout gf is slowing you down a bit, seeing the size of your plans!lol
Aim high indeed, and if she's used to the idea of you flooding the basement, you can allways settle for a wee bit smaller tank!
And remember to tell her that she's lucky to have a man that likes to stay at home and watch his fish.
You might as well be in a topless bar drinking beer with your buddies!lol

I kept discus briefly but had to give them up when i went travelling, but i am going to start up again sometime soon.
Discus are lovely looking fish and a tank full of them in their various guises can look superb. However they are expensive and you need to keep at least 6 or one will dominate and possibly bully the others. They require about 10 gallons each. They require soft water and are sensitive to nitrates, you need to keep the nitrates low. My tap water is hard with high Ph so I got a RO machine which filters most impurities and minerals out. A RO machine makes the PH very low. To bring it back to where it should be for discus, about 6.2, i mixed RO water with tap water. This mixing also put some minerals back into the water. You do need to keep the nitrates low, so i used to do 2 30% water changes a week, with a bonus one every so often. I am no expert on discus as i only kept them for 7 or 8 months. Some people keep small community fish with their discus like rummy's and neon. Best not keep larger fish with them, i put a triangle cichlid in with mine as it requires similar water and similar breeding patterns. This was a big mistake because once it got to 5 inches he was injuring my discus. They would get a sore and then die. I went from 6 to 2 in 3 or 4 weeks. If you keep a plec with discus you cant keep large ones as these can damage a discus.
If you have ever seen a tank full of full grown discus you will see why people put the effort in to keeping them

oh im not worried about that issues just the water issues since its live planted with the co2 expecially since i run the cheapers versions of it rather than the huge co2 setups that real awesome tanks run but the fish would not be a prob since i have guppies rummys cardnials and angels which all work and i dont have a reg pleco but Otocinclus

I have seen a decent sized planted tank with co2 and discus in a LFS. The tank was about 5ft long, 18in deep and 30in high. I know nothing about co2 set ups but i guess as long as you get the levels right then the discus will be good
