When you give your tank size in gallons and work out stocking etc are you using UK or US gallons?

I see more and more folk using US and someone recently told me that when it comes to aquatics that most folk including manufacturers are only using US gallons.

I've always used UK but I get the feeling i'm doing it wrong!

If I were to say one Oscar requires 55 UK gallons then in theory, 55 US gallons isn't enough if you are going by my opinion of what size a single Oscar should have to itself.Basically, a US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon.

I suppose at the end of the day we could argue about this until the cows come home. Without doing my calculations, 55 US gallons is probably around 46 UK gallons, in my opinion, nowhere near big enough for a single Oscar, however I don't want to argue with anyone about it

i always use UK gallons. I am English ))))) and I state UK gallons when i mention it to other members. even if I convert a USA members tank to gallons I still use UK g. some USA/other countrys use US. when they state US I sometimes check it on the home page tank volume converter. The converters great OFL )

What made me wonder is that I'm buying a marine tank and realised that the quoted volume is displayed only in US gallons, even on UK websites. In most cases when looking around I've had to refer to the manufacturers website to find out the litres so that I can convert to UK gallons.

I find it bizarre that a gallon can be a different amount depending what country you're in where as something like litres is universal. Surely everything aquatic should be talked about in litres because of this.

in my engineering course, in most cases, unless specified, gal size is always
3.85 liters.... but if UK gal is being ask....it is always 4.5461 liters.
it is like a bible to us and we had embedded that in our mind.... 5 years
in use, thus we can not forget..

when i used to handle bidding with corporate clients, i always have those
formula and conversion..from metric to english and vise versa. at any given
time, if somebody ask me how many stainless steel plate are needed for a
certain size of tank or number of cement bags for a certain concrete slab,
i can compute the quantity right away.

why? what is your computation? you have to consider that some dimension
give allowance as to how high is the water.... the clearance, though included
in the dimension is not computed in liter capacity. i believe you have around
380 liters??

According to the specifications on the website you linked to, your tank is 66 gallons. 300x4.5 equals 66.6

In the USA, a 300 L would be equivalent to 79 gallons, it seems a lot more impressive doesn't it?

the 300 liter size given is 66.6 gal...yes..it is correct but the
dimension given is 121cm x 51cm x 62cm. that will give you around
382602cc or 382.6 liters. i believe that what confuses Tony...
isn't it Tony????

They've buggered up mate.

If you check the Juwel website it says: 350L i guess taking into account that water doesn't go right to the very top of the tank.

that one will give you different size too. that is 121cm x 51cm x66cm
for a 407286 cc or 407.23 liters (cc mean cubic centimeter) where
1 liter = 1000 cc
