Who has looked into their local aquarium club?
I am a member of mine. We have meets about ever month or so.
We have guest speakers come in. Some are from around the world! It also has an auction where you can get some amazing deals and get some rare and neat fish!

Might be a good idea to look into yours

I wish we had something close to me because I would love to join...but the closest one that I can find is a couple hours away which it a little too far of a drive for me to do regularly.

Jenni - I heard there is a great club in Portland (know it's a drive from Astoria, but maybe it would work with another visit.....)

It's interesting to me how so many areas lack organizations dedicated to the aquarium hobby. The origin of this thought arises from one fact, aquariums are in 1/3 of homes in the developed world. 1 in every three homes has an aquarium. It is one of the top 5 recognized hobbies. We should all have a public forum ,where we can meet in person to discuss our passion. I believe complacency leaves us wanting but not doing anything to make it happen. It's like when people let their dreams drift away. This is nonsense, we get one life to live one chance. The average person lives to there 70's....That means at the age of 23...I am 1/3 of the way through my life...And that first 1/3 is spent finding out who I am and growing...It's this portion of my life that I am in now that is my prime...And I must now work to concrete my passions, and create a life worth remembering. I could go on and on with my passions, desires and inspiration for living but that is another story. It is with this thinking that I have decided to start a local aquarium club. I brainstormed, I organized a plan and my next stop is a few of the local pet stores for support. I urge all of you with out such organizations to form your own. I am sure there are many people in your surrounding area that share your passions. Let's give them and ourselves a gift...bring a local aquarium club to your area, because maybe others lack the faith. Maybe they don't believe in the strength and will power within themselves. I'll keep you posted on my progress

PS. It is a work in progress, with a coming deployment I will be working against the clock, my plan is to have the seed planted upon my departure and to help it grow along the way.

What i heard from our local fishclub is not much good.
They do tankcontests and all is judged by one guy.
Tanks have to be theme tanks, and my tanks do have a theme, keeping my fish happy.
But that does not count for much, i think.
Plus i must admit that not many fishkeepers around here are into the bigger tanks.
I'm glad we got OFL to share our passion.
Codeman, by starting your own club, you make the rules, so that's cool.

Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

just don't make so many rules you end up banning yourself cos you don't fit. I tried it. 6ft blonde's with ferrari, million £££ in the bank in door swimming pool and out door pool, single, desperate for sex nymph, aged between 18-25 and must like old guys. I thought it a good start for a fish club )))))

There doesn't appear to be any clubs in my area which is a shame because I would definitely be interested in attending. We have photography clubs, fishing clubs, radio clubs, clubs for just about anything, but not for aquatic enthusiasts, seems a bit strange that nobody has started something, I'm sure a lot of people would be interested. Maybe there is, but I haven't been able to find any clubs listed online.
It is something I have thought of doing myself but I really think I'm aquatic club is a little different from something I already do which is a radio club for amateur radio enthusiasts. I have got all the radio equipment setup at my house so people can actually do something. An aquatic club would have to be thought out carefully so as to make it interesting, guest speakers, maybe trips out to commercial aquariums. I'm not sure that a meeting at someone's house once a week would be particularly fulfilling for most, unless it was a proper social club with a license bar etc.
I may create a webpage and just stick it on the Internet and see if anything happens. You never know, somebody might come forward who is willing to do all the organizing and get it together properly
