To All Fish People in the community:

is it possible that a certain kind of fish will spawn and hatch the eggs even
without a male partner???????

i borrowed Win's female convict in solitude since the topic is about keeping
fish alone in the tank.....and yet possible to lay eggs.....the question is..
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE EGGS WILL HATCH????

Good one!

No...many fish, birds, reptiles will lay eggs without the presence of a male. All eggs will be infertile though...more of a sign that they are ready to breed even though a male partner is not present. Unless the fishy's boyfriend is sneaking into the tank at night!

I agree with the masses here Paul. that Convict will require a male to have fertilized eggs.

to be honest... i have this info 10 years ago that there is a certain kind of
fish that could reverse sex orientation. keeping all females will eventually
spawn and one or two among them will change sex and become male and the reproductive
system keep on going for that batch... how ever, the offspring are all sterile and
will not reproduce anymore....i am keeping track track of that study but lately, i
happen to stumble in this theory that female cichlids could still lay eggs and hatch
without the aid of a male fish. i am trying to documented this and trying to get
inputs from the breeders in my place.... this is unusual and i am not trying to
say it is possible but i'm coming to believe it is....i am just trying to get
confirmation from the research institute doing fish study in my place.

black sea bass, parrotfish, and red snapper, thru their lives a dominant female may change into a male at the death of its mate. this is well documented. however this all seems to occour with marine species, im not familliar with one that does it in freshwater.

I strongly believe this is a viable possibility. I have heard of this before I am sure. There are many what seem to us anomalies in nature. The sea horse carrying the young for example or the unique parenting a male penguin ehibits. The world is full of wondrous occurrences

i was wondering the same lately, for i got a female Guppy in with my Puffer.
The male was in there several montsh ago, but got eaten presumably.
Now the female keeps giving birth over and over.
8 weeks ago 1 baby, 5 weeks ago 17 babies and 2 weeks ago 3 more.
This seems to be happening due to preservation of male guppy sperm kinda like the way rats do.
With rats ,if the whole population on earth would be eradicated, but one female, the female will be able to have babies without the need for a male.
but i guess that's not exactly what you are talking about.
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!
