Gars are cool.
Congratz on the new fish.
I started out with some swordtails to make mine feel at home.
Took a day or 2 , until my Oscar knocked one of the swordtails out, and my Gar finally ate it.
After he ate 2 swordtails i didn't give him any more live food.
I was gonna starve him for 3 days to switch onto thawed frozen feeders.
But the second day he came to the spot where i feed my other fish, begging!
I quickly got a frozen fish and just wiggled it beneath the water surface.
He immediately took it.
Try a frozen feeder or a piece of shrimp.
the guys at the LFS never saw him eat and they were pretty surprised that i could handfeed him within a week.
Give him a little more time, like Necro suggested, he'll come around.
Mine has just passed a foot in lenght, within a year.
Any more Gar questions feel free to ask.
Can we get some pics as well?
btw what's the dimensions of your tank?
and do you know what he ate at his previous owner?
Here's my first time handfeeding in pics.I had him less then a week here.
The feeding of my gar takes longer that any other fish, because he's an ambush predator, and will take a lot of time sneaking up on the food.
I don't know if you know these sites, but these sites have very good info on Gars.
