Could have something to do with the possibilty of irresposible fishkeepers, that may throw their fish into the wild waters over there.
And the fear of those fish taking over the habitat, like snakeheads and Clarias catfish did before.
With most banned fish that's the reason.

Here's a link with some info

The risk is bigger in the snakehead and clarias, for both will move to other waters over land if threatened or if food is low.
I don't see a Piranha doing that!

I think that piranha have definitely gained an unjust reputation for being bloodthirsty killers that will strip a hand down to its bone is placed in an aquarium.

The only thing I find extremely distasteful is these idiots who get enjoyment out of watching the fish attack, tear to pieces and eat alive other creatures and then make videos for YouTube.

There's a pretty serious problem with invasive species here in Florida everything from fish to snakes and everything in between.

its because they can survive in some of our southern lakes. and even several lakes around my house, which are warmed by power plants, can house a tropical warm water fish quite happily, there is one around an eastman kodak facility here that is loaded with peacock bass, which live side by side with those piranhas you mentioned.

this img shows piranha legality in the usa.
