TOPIC: Axolotl

Axolotl 2 years, 1 month ago #88219

Anybody else keep these? I'm getting three shipped to me on Wednesday. Just wondering if any one has years of experience and can let me in on any secrets.

there you go.
I was planning for axolotls just before i got into fishkeeping.
And that got out of hand, but the axolotls are still on my Future Pets list.
emarkable creatures, that regenerate their gills and feet if they are bitten off.
They stay at a "Larval"stage for their whole lifes.
Very cool, and you won't regret them.
Better start getting some small fish quarantined!

Here's a nice vid that explains quite a lot and shows the different species.

I guess my time in the operating theatre gave me a strange fascination for things like that.
Well, I'm into that stuff , maybe thats why i like the axolotls so much...

I've been surprised to see what people recommend for a tank size. They say one or two can fit in a 10g! These can get a foot long, if it were a fish you'd need at least 55 gallons, minimum; but I suppose that's because fish swim around a lot and these guys just sit mostly.

I've been looking at getting an axolotl for awhile now! My kids keep killing off the fish in the 10gl, so as soon as they're ALL dead (minus the Gourami) I'm going to re-cycle the tank and get an axolotl. The Gourami can go kick it in the Oscar tank. That fish is the meanest damn thing I've ever owned, I'm sure he'll run the tank in no time. lol

The kids would also like to get a PacMan Frog, but I think we'll stick with the salamander for now.
If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?

Axolotls have a shortage of thyroxine in their bodies.
This stops them from developing into an adult state.
If you feed the axolotl tablets that contain the thyroxine, they will fully develop.
But this may shorten their lifespan drasticly.
