TOPIC: Silver Arowanas

Silver Arowanas 2 years, 1 month ago #89594

Does anybody keep silver arowanas, if so what is your setup. Or what kind of setup do you need to home one of these giants.

considering they can reach 3 feet you do need quite a big tank. I've seen people keeping them in 125 gallon tanks and as long as you don't go to mad with any other fish, you probably could maintain water quality if you have lots of filtration. However, I've only ever seen a fairly small specimens in tanks of this size, probably not more than 24 inches. A very large specimen would need quite a bit of width to be able to move around. I think you be looking at around 200 gallons if you want to do it properly

i had a short stint caring for a silver aro and it also eat like
a pig and don't give respect to other fishes no matter how big
other fishes are.... my wife dump her aro in my 220 gal tank and
it grew more than 6 inches in 5 months.... unfortunately, i lost
him when my tank broke down.

aro needs wide lateral surface area to swim... long and wide...
doesn't care anything below.... a 12 inches deep water is okey as
long as it is wide and long..say 3 ft x 6 ft.

I keep a red tail golden. its around 14" now growing slow but steady. its in a 150g uk or 180g USA. I would go for a larger tank, give yourself enough space so you don't have to fill it to the top. these fish jump and can bash the tank cover when feeding so don't fill like a std tank. wide 30"+ and at least 6ft. they eat lots as Paul said, I once owned 4 oscars in a tank at the same time but the arow eats more than they ever did. very aggressive to tank mates, so make sure they are fast or tough. if they don't keep out the way they will get nipped. filters need to match the tank size and deal with the large amount of food you put in,(i use 2 x FX5) this means you need to stay on top of your water change and don't get lazy or your nitrates will go sky high. they don't take well to change in temp, PH, and rise or fall in nitrates so regular steady maintenance is needed. thats another good reason for a larger tank, it will help keep things more stable. if you do decide to buy look for drop eye. the eye should sit straight and not look down. check the eye is clear not cloudy. also spinal curve, any bend in the back will get worst as the fish grows.(more common on silvers) chipped scales another thing to look for. (this can heal)and lastly check for gill curl. the gill cover should lay flat and not curl up. this is a sign the fish has been poorly kept in a small tank with poor water flow. consider the fish to reach between 28" to 36" thats more than a mans arm length, and live for 25yr+

we had our arow's about the same time, maybe i had mine a month longer? your arow put on 6" in that time. mine was 11"-12" and is now 15" that 3 or 4 inch. i would say thats ok as the silver reach up to 35" and mine reach 28". silvers reach 30" in aquariums where RTG reach 24" at best. i am not 100% but i think they take 5yr to reach full size. mine was chipped(registered) in July 07 making it around 3yr old. so i have 2yrs for it to grow 9". at 1.5 a month I am happy with that. if you feed to much and force them to grow faster the colors don't tend to be as bright. its not as fast as a oscar but the end result is much bigger than a oscar
