Im not a big of plastic plants you buy from aquarium shops especially for larger tanks but mine are from a fake plant shop made from a silk like material. They looks fairly realistic and now I have weighted them down they stay in one place. :)

when i was still using the overhead box type filter i used to have plants in it

Like aus-car i am not a fan of plastic plants,
mainly because i had a parrot fish strangled when it got caught and probably tried to wriggle free and got caught tighter, they also seem to harden after a long time in water,
the silk ones are softer and in my opinon more fish friendly,
although i doubt if a large Oscar would get caught in plants but maybe scratch themselves,
myself the only joy i have had with plants in the O's tank is large piece of planted bogwood that has leaves, and they have never really bothered with that.

I've always had my plants in my tank with my O's they are on bogwood though so the roots are alittle protected they sometimes chew them and the leaves clog my filter quite often but they have survived.

I was researching plants and i learned that most aquatic plants use ammonia as their primary source of nitrogen, not nitrates. This will lead to a reduction of nitrates as the ammonia is fully consumed and not reduced to nitrite and nitrate. I was wondering if this will starve off the biofilter as they are not getting the ammonia that the plants use up. Any thoughts???

I never even considered these facts, I have plants in my tank for dora's and plecs, they look good and I assumed it helped oxygen levels. I thought they might help break down ammonia, like filters as you get live rock and coral for your marine tanks. But that is a interesting question whether they benefit the tank or not?

i don't have any scientific explanation before but plenty of roots inside the tank
could help you maintain the water quality. i had done it before without water
change for 17 months and yet fishes still taste good... (i normally grill them before)
those ammonium nitrate is being consumed by the plants as fertilizer... unfortunately
i am not a scientist and do not keep record nor info about the experiment... but one
thing i am sure, plenty of rooting plants keep your water in good shape...
