Dnic created the topic: New to live plants!

Well after upgrading my 30g to a 55g i have been thinking of what to do with the 30g and i wanted to make a planted convict tank out of it. Could someone send me a link or something that gives all the info i need on taking care of live plants. Also maybe a list of plants that go good with cichlids. Thanks.

PS I looked for a sticky post but didn't see one. If there is one in here just let me know and i will search harder.

:} thanks again!

"New to Live Plants"

aren't we all. ;)

not a lot of plant experts on this site. but i give credit to people that are good at keeping an assortment of plants. .... It seems like a "whole nother ball game"... and oscars tend to destroy them.

keep us updated on your progress.

Ya i wont be putting plants in my oscar tank till i can keep them alive in the 30g. My vision is making the ground covered in forground plants. Dont no if it will work but hey live and learn.

I have java fern, amazon swords and floating elodea with my cons. They all do well with low to med light and moderatly soft water

I have no idea why the water bill is so high

My experience of plants is limited to when i kept community fish before i found cichlids. I was a poor fish keeper only changing the water once every 2 or 3 months and never cleaned the gravel. Well my plants did amazingly well in this gravel. Some shot out root runners and baby plants were growing everywhere. Due to my lack of fish keeping skills, my fish kept dying and i was told to do more water changes and clean the gravel which i did. Well the plants didnt like this, some died and a lot shrunk back. So all i can say is dont clean the gravel!

I can't get no sleep

Agreed. Plants do better in a tank with higher nitrogen based pollutants due to overstocking or poor maintenance skills
