the stuff your talking about... is it white? if it is its just a fungus that grows on the wood it wont harm anything in your tank.

white fuzzy stuff?...

some woods have fungus and things grow on it. The driftwood i use, hasn't had anything like that grow on it . and i have had them in the tank for over a year.

I recommend taking the wood out and scrubbing it thoroughly regularly.

.....

post a pic and better explain the fungus(or whatever it is) growing on your wood.... someone with more experience on this will chime in. good luck

This happens on some varieties of driftwood. Is it a whitish cloudy looking slime and/or a cottony looking fungus type. Its pretty normal, and harmless. In a few weeks it will go away on its own, or you can take a brush and scrub it off. It's not uncommon with new pieces of wood that were once submerged, then dried out, and then submerged again.
