So i know O's dont normally do good with plants but mine has never seemed to even bothered with the ones i have had in. I am a complete newbie when it comes to planted tanks and need as much help as possible. I really want a nice planted tank for him and it would be in a 55 gallon. i really need guidance and a good idea that fits well with a oscar. Thanks in advance

I had the same exact situation as you I also have a 55 gallon tank with a single Oscar in it who doesn't mind plants. I have dabbled with plants in the past but not very seriously until recently.

What I would recommend is get a couple of small terracotta pots and plant your plants in those, that way when you want to re-scape you can just move the pots around. Also it makes it less likely that he will move them around due to the weight.

2nd I would recommend getting some Flourish and API root tabs (Plant Food) for your plants, and stick one of each into each pot. As far as lighting goes I am still on a learning curve when it comes to that I currently have x3 30 watt T5`s so we will see how it goes.

For plants I have found that Amazon swords work really well as they can take some punishment if the Oscar decides to turn his attention to them. Here is some pictures of my setup I took last night:

i would either go with plants
or id go with oscars

if you have to do both i would do what larch has done
i would suggest getting a good substrate for your pots though

and id plug the holes in the bottom so if you ever raise the pots up .. that nasty anarobic(sp im sure) water does not pollute the water

I tried plants, real, fake, potted etc... every single one eventually was pulled out by my Oscar. So now there are some rocks, shells & driftwood in the tank... and he's happy (and so am I)!

Larch your tank looks great though!

There is a fine line between sanity and insanity.... Come walk it with me!

Thanks, it is still a work in progress and a steep learning curve as I never had any plants before but so far so good. Some pictures of my Amazons sprouting runners.

The plants are doing great. Good job larch.

It will be a jungle in there before you know it.

My aim is to make a fully planted tank with a balanced eco system which requires minimal cleaning and water changes. I introduced the zebra snails as algae control and then the plants too keep my water quality good. I am now looking at Asian trumpet snails to take care of the fish and food waste.
