tjwalley created the topic: Not much luck!!!

I have 5 sword plants the i put in a couple weeks ago. I have had to replant them every other night when i get home from work and the leaves are gettin ripped up daily! I knew getting into this that i'd have some troubles, but there are several videos online of big planted aquariums with tons of big "aggressive" cichlids so i know it's possible! I'll admit my substrate (regular black gravel) is not all that deep, but i did pile it up where i have my plants, and in the next few weeks i'll be getting 4 more big bags to add to it. I'm open to any tips or tricks any of u may have used to successfully keep your planted cichlid tanks up and running! It's been fun learning about all the different plants and doing something i've never tried, and i like that they help with water quality, BUT with these fish and they way i'm doing it, it'll never work!

Don't bother. I had a plant in with the fry and by the time they were a month and a half old they had destroyed it.

I give them fake plants that are weighted at the bottom and they redecorate daily.

I just remembered some pics i saw on here ages ago. Someone planted their plants in little terracotta pots and had stones around the top to keep the dirt in. It won`t stop them pulling on the leaves but it will keep them planted at least. Only thing i would be worried about is them pulling the leaves and tipping the pots over and hitting the bottom of the tank so i would have lots of substrate around them to prevent a disaster!
I have silk plants now, i`ve gotten over the urge to have live plants long ago LOL and its fun to watch them try to destroy them knowing they can`t do any harm :)

I put my plants in a pot with gravel and then a bigger rock on top. It has worked so far :)

If you are not looking so much for aesthetics and more water quality, you can do what I did... the plant doesn't even need to be "in the water"... let me show you, it is easier then too explain again :P

I think i'll try all of the above! Thanks to all for the tips!

@OrangeO: that looks pretty cool! I'm wanting to get a bunch of long "sea weed" looking plants to go along the back of the tank, if i did that with the bamboo it would look like i have plants growing from the bottom of the tank all the way out the top! (which i think would be a pretty cool illusion!) I'm goin for both asthetics and to move toward a more self mantaining tank so that'd be perfect! Definitely gonna do that! Thanks again!

A question about the pots, do they need to be very big? The sword plants look like they grow a lot of little roots instead of big, long anchoring roots...is that how they normally grow?

No no, it doesn't have to be a big pot. The pot I have my plants in are 3 inches wide. They could be smaller but that is what I had.
