Phantom created the topic: Growing plants with low nitrates

At some point in the future I may try a few plants in my 90g with my Oscar. My question is this: since I do tons of wc's and keep my nitrates between 5-10 ppm will this still provide a few plants enough nutrients to grow?

and the fertilisers in your soil.

My little tank that's completely overgrown has never had more than 10 nitrates, and that only for a few hours. Maybe it's too soon to say, but I can't imagine low nitrates in your water, on its own, being a limiting factor.

In the wild, nitrates are never high, yet plants grow nicely.
High nitrates do speed up the growth of some plants your aquarium nitrate level should be high enough for rapid growth of plants since they are rarely that hig h in nature.
I am not a botanist and I don't know if there are some plants who have special needs like very high nitrates, however there shouldn't be many

You can also use root tabs to supplement the plants.

I have a very heavily planted 75 and i get readings of nearly 0 every time I test water. They suck up the nitrates so fast. I feed 2x a day to try and keep nitrates somewhat high.
