it can be as much or as little as you want it to be. If you want a nice low light tank with crypts, java fern, anabias, ect then no its a matter of top offs and water changes every couple weeks and maybe a trim every couple months. If you like the high light jungle with lots of variety in plants then yes you will be doing weekly trims, weekly 50% wc, adjusting co2, adding ferts daily, dealing with algae.

I reccommend starting slow, its easier to learn how to handle plants and there needs under low lights cause plant growth is slower and so is algae then move to high light high tech cause if you dont know how to handle algae and plant diffencies they will take over and ruin the tank and the experience

Oh, Ken, I love it!

Will you let those lilies reach the surface?

...and where is that Madagascar lace plant?

thanks nina, the lotus leafs in the pic are submerged leafs when they reach the surface they fall apart but the plant will put out surface leafs and i might let a few of them float but the problem is once you let some float they will stop growing submerged leafs and only make floating leafs so i havent decided what im going to do yet

I had to cut them out, due to how I have my water flow setup once they got close to the surface they just started to be blown all over the place so submerged leaves only. Some of those submerged leaves are getting as big as my hand though!!

Well dialing in the co2 took longer than I expected and its instability caused a outbreak of black brush algae so I fought that but I finally got the gas right and things are growing well, stuff on the left in the back its taking is sweet time though
