I'd love real plants but its not realistic. What plants I have seen that are at the LFS and are artificial look like something a cartoon would have in them. I'm at a loss on how to find quality plants to chose from. I don't want many just something to perhaps hide the intake and provide offset from my driftwood.

You could always check hobby stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. A lot of times they have cheaper silk plants then the LFS anyways.
Just make sure there is no exposed metal wires on them.
You can also check out the DrsFosterandSmith website and see if there is anything you like. Here is a link...

And it may also not hurt to check Amazon. They usually have some good prizes as well.

is there a reason why you don't want live plants?

there are aquatic plants that you don't need a lot of time and care for:

java moss
amazons
anubias
lucky bamboo
water lily
the list goes on and on....

Not at all but I've heard they don't fair well with Oscars. Are you saying these are tough enough? Also is there any negative impact on bio load?

Oscars react to live plants differently , although a fair amount of them seem to enjoy shredding them.
I am only aware of positive effects of live plants , like lowering Nitrate levels. But I am not certain. I am sure someone will have a little more info.

Lucky bamboo is toxic to cats and dogs so be careful with it, it has to have the leaves above water so they would be sticking up out of the tank where cats especially can knaw on them. Some cats don't bother them but some are just not that bright lol.

I like the look of your silk plants any ideas where I can find some that look good? I haven't made it to a crafts store yet but have been to three local chain stores and no luck.
